MANDARIN "TARGETED IMMERSION"

Numerous studies have indicated that balanced bilingual learning can enhance a child’s cognitive development, leading to better comprehension, analytical and problem-solving skills. Presidio Knolls pairs the progressive method of child-directed learning with a language rich in culture and tradition. The instruction of Mandarin is approached with researched-based strategies that aim to adapt to young language learners’ natural tendencies to compartmentalize different languages through time and face recognition. Therefore, the Mandarin-speaking teaching team leads instruction in the morning, while the English-speaking teaching team leads instruction in the afternoon. For further consistency and clarity, during the section of the day dedicated to Mandarin, teachers speak to students in Mandarin at all times. Research indicates that while a child is learning a new language, it is important to continue to develop their thinking and expression in their primary language. Communication in the primary language can facilitate more critical thinking and complex expression than a secondary language, so we place great value in our English instruction, as well.
Our program allows children to absorb the language and adapt to it. At this stage, children do not need every word to be translated for them, because by observing and interacting in an environment that immerses them in the language, they are able to figure out meaning from context, and pick up vocabulary because it is a part of their environment.
