In 2018, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) helped launch a global effort to assess student “global competency.” This was also the year our middle school program at Presidio Knolls School (PKS) was being designed by a group of educators and researchers committed to creating a program like no other—a middle school founded on the promise that our graduates would have the skills, mindsets, and content knowledge necessary to thrive in an interconnected, multicultural, and quickly changing world.
Over the past few months, the Elementary School (ES) Wellness Team at Presidio Knolls School (PKS)—consisting of Kayla Story and Missy Silvers—has been visiting second-grade classrooms to lead lessons and hands-on activities designed to help students explore neurodiversity. These sessions highlight how our brains are uniquely wired and how these differences contribute to a diverse, inclusive, and supportive learning community.
Our commitment to eschew letter/number grades in favor of more nuanced forms of feedback is a foundation of our approach to teaching and learning. And we are proud to be leading a broad movement of 21st century schools approaching assessment from a researched-based, holistic perspective.
Something truly magical about preschool at PKS is how student curiosity can drive class exploration. In a Reggio Emilia inspired program, the curriculum isn’t established in advance of the class - it develops along with the students’ emerging interests…
